Cambridge Scraps Congestion Charge Plans
Cambridge City Council has abandoned its proposal to implement a congestion charge similar to the one in London. The council had planned to establish a "Cambridge Sustainable Travel Zone" that would have required drivers to pay at least £5 per day to enter or travel within the designated area. This was expected to generate over £26 million annually, which would have been used to fund improvements to public transportation and cycling infrastructure in the city.
Concerns were raised about the potential impact on low-income families, and the council's public consultation revealed that 58% of respondents were opposed to the congestion charge.
